José Cabrera Bonilla, known as José El Calvo, was born on February 11, 1956, in the municipality of Imbert in the province of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He developed his early musical talents as a percussionist at the age of 14, playing the tambora in a local group. As he matured in his studies, he decided to pursue music professionally and learned to play the piano and saxophone. From there, he started with the musical band “Los Principes De Imbert.

José Cabrera Bonilla, known as José El Calvo, was born on February 11, 1956, in the municipality of Imbert in the province of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He developed his early musical talents as a percussionist at the age of 14, playing the tambora in a local group. As he matured in his studies, he decided to pursue music professionally and learned to play piano and saxophone. From there, he began with the musical band "Los Principes De Imbert".

After recording several hits with the prominent band from the municipality of Imbert, Puerto Plata, he received a musical offer from a renowned merengue singer, where he was able to further develop and grow in the artistic field, which was just beginning. After contributing greatly to music and compositions, he joined the recognized and prominent group in 1976. He remained around 14 years as a prominent member of the group, and in the last years, he decided to retire and take a break. Then in 1992, immediately after the reformation of the group, the prominent saxophonist resumed it, now called "José El Calvo Y Su Artilleria Pesada". He recorded around 9 albums with Allegro Produccion label where he had his great hits such as "El Picoteao" and "La Samaritana". He also recorded 3 albums with JAUN Y NELSON RECORD label along with the SONY RECORDS record company.

He has won various awards such as the "Premios Casandra.
